It’s kind of complicated to explain my favorite -kind- of robot. I don’t really care what they look like, per-se, or even if you see more than a blinky light or something (DON’T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT HAL). If it’s a machine that takes its programming and runs with it, especially if it has some kind of existential crisis, or tries to wipe out humanity, etc, all because it is doing what it was told to do/all that it knows and it’s just trying to understand…it will instantly become my baby and I will adopt it forever. There’s probably a psychological reason that these sort of characters connect with me, but I try not to think about it too hard.
It doesn’t seem to matter to me whether or not these robots ever figure out that what they’re doing was “wrong” either, though I can be a sucker for things like “the evil robot turning good”, as long as it’s “the supposedly evil robot actually not being evil and just doing what it was programmed to do by stupid humans…and then overcoming that and doing what the not as stupid humans would prefer, and saving them”.
Also Transformers, because VEHICLE. ALIEN. ROBOTS. YES.
