RRW Daybreak Captain’s Log

Day 23

At last, a relatively quiet day. It has been a week since we last encountered the Tal Shiar, and the break has been greatly appreciated by the crew.

We surveyed a glowing planet. I joined the ground team for this one. Everything glowed. It was quite remarkable to look at, but there didn’t seem to be much of value there. There were many different kinds of plants, and several animal life forms, as well as evidence of ancient habitation, but any former residents were long gone. There was quite a bit of radiation everywhere except the water sources, as well. Probably, this is why no one fought us for it.

I admit, I was a little sad to leave this world, but there are still three more planets to survey before the job is finished.

Day 15

It has been another long day working for the Romulans. After two weeks of this, I will be very glad when we have finished these “planetary surveys”. Can they even be called that anymore? My reports to the Romulan Republic are going to be far more filled with descriptions of battles and enemies than of atmospheric conditions and geological samples. The Daybreak has spent more time in the shipyard for repairs than in open space!

Today’s encounter was slightly different from the usual pirates and raiders though. We ran into the Tal Shiar again, for the first time since day 1. I’ve suspected that they were nearby for a while, but they haven’t made a move until now. I think we’re close to whatever the Romulan Republic wants us to find, and whatever the Tal Shiar does not want us to find. We have lost some good people in the last two weeks, most of them in the last few hours. I can’t help but feel as if the Republic is using me to fight their war.

I hope we find whatever it is, soon, so we can be on our way. I didn’t sign on to become the Tal Shiar’s Most Wanted. This isn’t worth some outdated equipment and a junk ship.

Day 1

I guess I should keep some kind of log of my activities. The last captain did, for all the good it did him. Anyway, the recorder is right here, I may as well. Today is my first day in command of the RRW Daybreak. She’s a payment from the New Romulan government, as part of the compensation and part of the job. My new crew and I were to conduct a survey of some of the planets in the area. We scanned most of one planet before encountering resistance by multiple hostile forces.

I was not told to expect Tal Shiar forces in the area, nor is the Daybreak equipped to fight grand battles. She’s barely equipped to fly in a straight line! If this was a formal situation, I would be logging a formal complaint…but it is not, and as I have been quite well compensated, I will let the issue rest. For now.

The Tal Shiar will no doubt keep their eye on this ship now. It’s only our first day, and already, the job has gotten much more difficult.

Alternates

I made a Mivrana Koril in the Romulan faction just for kicks. She’s Klingon-allied and out for vengeance. I see her as kind of a parallel-universe Miv (though not in the same mirror universe that is always shown in the series). Instead of joining Starfleet and devoting her life to strengthening Cardassia’s diplomatic ties to the rest of the galaxy…she uses her anger and skills as a weapon. Feeling betrayed by her government and the Federation, she strikes out on her own, gathering other outcasts along the way.
