Day 31

We found the Tal Shiar nosing around our shiny planet. My suspicions were correct…they were here looking for the same thing we were. The difference is, they knew what it was. Unfortunately, they grabbed it and beamed out before we got a good look. It seemed to be a device of some kind.

We didn’t have much time to ponder it before Tholians showed up. I had chased one of the Tal Shiar onto a ridge to question him, before they all beamed out. This left my crew and I in a good position to ambush the Tholians. I’m proud of them…I think we’re really beginning to work together when it counts.

Still, the Republic won’t be pleased that we lost the device. I wonder if we’ll still get paid for the “planetary surveys”?

Day 30

The Republic sent us back to the glowing planet for a more detailed analysis. There is something here that they want, badly, perhaps in the ruins? We gathered some potentially valuable gases and minerals, but they told us that we could keep them. Whatever they want is worth even more. I wish the Romulans would just come out and tell me what I’m supposed to be looking for. I’ve come an awfully long way from Cardassian space just to play games of secrecy and manipulation with other species.

This planet is quite lovely, though, in an overgrown-jungle kind of way. I don’t mind being paid to spend time here.

Day 26

There wasn’t a planet at the coordinates we were given today. There were, however, a lot of rocks, as if from the remains of a small planetoid. It gave the helmsman a good workout, dodging all of the debris to get the scans. We also collected some gasses, but nothing particularly valuable.

A pirate vessel showed up and demanded to know what we were doing, scavenging in his territory. Before we could respond, he opened fire. We were forced to destroy his vessel, and ours was severely damaged.

Why are we out here, squabbling over rocks?

Day 23

At last, a relatively quiet day. It has been a week since we last encountered the Tal Shiar, and the break has been greatly appreciated by the crew.

We surveyed a glowing planet. I joined the ground team for this one. Everything glowed. It was quite remarkable to look at, but there didn’t seem to be much of value there. There were many different kinds of plants, and several animal life forms, as well as evidence of ancient habitation, but any former residents were long gone. There was quite a bit of radiation everywhere except the water sources, as well. Probably, this is why no one fought us for it.

I admit, I was a little sad to leave this world, but there are still three more planets to survey before the job is finished.

Day 15

It has been another long day working for the Romulans. After two weeks of this, I will be very glad when we have finished these “planetary surveys”. Can they even be called that anymore? My reports to the Romulan Republic are going to be far more filled with descriptions of battles and enemies than of atmospheric conditions and geological samples. The Daybreak has spent more time in the shipyard for repairs than in open space!

Today’s encounter was slightly different from the usual pirates and raiders though. We ran into the Tal Shiar again, for the first time since day 1. I’ve suspected that they were nearby for a while, but they haven’t made a move until now. I think we’re close to whatever the Romulan Republic wants us to find, and whatever the Tal Shiar does not want us to find. We have lost some good people in the last two weeks, most of them in the last few hours. I can’t help but feel as if the Republic is using me to fight their war.

I hope we find whatever it is, soon, so we can be on our way. I didn’t sign on to become the Tal Shiar’s Most Wanted. This isn’t worth some outdated equipment and a junk ship.

Day 1

I guess I should keep some kind of log of my activities. The last captain did, for all the good it did him. Anyway, the recorder is right here, I may as well. Today is my first day in command of the RRW Daybreak. She’s a payment from the New Romulan government, as part of the compensation and part of the job. My new crew and I were to conduct a survey of some of the planets in the area. We scanned most of one planet before encountering resistance by multiple hostile forces.

I was not told to expect Tal Shiar forces in the area, nor is the Daybreak equipped to fight grand battles. She’s barely equipped to fly in a straight line! If this was a formal situation, I would be logging a formal complaint…but it is not, and as I have been quite well compensated, I will let the issue rest. For now.

The Tal Shiar will no doubt keep their eye on this ship now. It’s only our first day, and already, the job has gotten much more difficult.

Quark’s is always a great place to make friends and learn about new cultures.

“When drinking in a bar, it is important to sing pirate songs.”
“Really?” Miv set her glass down and leaned forward, her companion already tilting unsteadily on the barstool.
“Oh yes,” the other woman’s words slurred merrily, “do they not sing on Cardassia?”
“Oh, of course,” Miv nodded, “but I can’t recall ever hearing any Cardassian pirate drinking songs.”
“That’s too bad,” the woman nodded solemnly, then attempted to snap her fingers, her hand coming dangerously close to knocking her mug over, “I know, I’ll teach you!”
Miv lent the woman an amused smile, “That sounds delightful!”
“Another drink!” the woman cheered, “we must drink while we sing!”
Miv gestured surreptitiously to the Ferengi bartender, “Yes, but we better make it synthahol or we will be concluding our concert in the infirmary.”

SHADY PLANTS
Now I am starting to think about him being this sneaky side character that shows up as a guest in some of the episodes, trying to deal genetically modified plants to other cultures when he thinks no one is looking. He’s charming, he’s sneaky, and you can’t trust him for a moment. But he was the best xenobotanist in his class and he can keep just about any kind of plant alive.

“Let’s give the Cardassian captain a mostly Bajoran crew and send her on diplomatic missions to resolve disputes with Bajorans and Cardassians.”

Starfleet may think this is amusing, but I can assure you, I do not. Do they think these sorts of traumas resolve themselves in a matter of moments? As individuals, we will find common ground and even friendships, but as neighboring races…we have a long way to go.
