Day 87.3

Our employer told me that we “would know the cargo when we saw it”. I do believe that we have found what he was interested in. We have met with no resistance as of yet, but there do seem to be life signs aboard the ship, though they are faint, and the gasses in the surrounding area make it difficult to pinpoint their location. I will start sending teams to set up pattern enhancers. We shouldn’t take chances with the gasses interfering with transport.

Day 87.1

Today’s “salvage” operation has taken a decidedly macabre turn for me. Our employers neglected to mention that the ship we were to pick apart was Cardassian. They did say to expect bodies, possibly dead and dying. Now, more than ever, I am concerned about my ability to remain impartial. I suppose this will be the test.

Day 83

Salvage. My favorite. It seems to be a request in this area. At least this one is on a desert planet. I find the climate to be just about right! My Romulan crewmembers don’t seem to mind too much, either, though Keitia declined to come on this trip as excessive light doesn’t agree with her.

We should have the requested parts and be back underway by the end of the day.

Day 79

Being back on the station brought back a lot of memories…and a very strange dream. People I knew; people I didn’t know but who seemed familiar, and there was a Federation starship, too. It was a very vivid dream and I keep thinking about it.

We’re heading out now, after having sold most of our inventory and found more employers and contacts willing to hire us. We also received word that the Republic accepted the trade proposal! Things are definitely looking good for our future.

Day 77

We’re heading for an old asteroid mining station that I used to frequent when I was working freighters. Apparently, mining operations have ceased since then, and it has now been opened as a trading post. It sounds like a promising place to sell some of the things we’ve acquired over the last few months. The crew is in good spirits, and it is very interesting to see the change in all of them.

D’Van has become the heart of this little crew, sharing charming stories of his life, and somehow managing to make every dark situation seem like an adventure worth experiencing.

Tovan and I have worked out the chain of command to a greater degree. There’s still an element of distrust between us, but I’m not certain that will ever go away. I do believe that he is a good man, however, and that he is truly trying to do right by this crew.

Keitia has started to open up. She has a sharp, biting wit that took some getting used to. With her, I don’t have to guard my every thought during conversation for fear of causing an interplanetary diplomatic incident. She’s the most politically incorrect person I’ve met, and highly critical of everyone, but in a sardonic, humorous way that I deeply appreciate.

Demala seems to have changed completely in the short time I’ve known her. Maybe she was simply putting on a mask before, or maybe being on this ship has changed her, but she is different now. Everything from the clothing she wears (Klingon? I’m no expert. It’s some kind of revealing armor) and her lengthening hairstyle, to her entire attitude has shifted. I’m never quite sure what to make of her, but she is probably the most competent ship’s officer of all of us.

Day 69

We haven’t had any work since the paper debacle. Once the ship was finally emptied of that stuff, we’ve been collecting minerals and gasses for trade. It’s been quiet, mostly flying around under cloak until we know the area is clear, and then scanning for our next cargo. It seems as if the pirates were only interested in the chunks of rock near Romulan space. We’ve been relatively unmolested out here.

Day 61

Our next job was to purchase a substantial amount of paper, of all things, for our buyer, and deliver it to him at a pre-arranged location on his homeworld. We were en-route when we received word that the entire planet had been destroyed. Our entire ship is now full of paper that we will have to sell off somewhere before we can pick up new cargo.

Keitia tried to lift our spirits by pointing out that at least he didn’t order something that could spoil and start smelling up the cargo bay.

Day 59

I bought myself a…very…used jacket! It’s seen some better days, but it’s been patched up, and the tailor said it looks good on me. It should at least ward off the chill.

The Republic agreed to consider the trade proposal. My crew would get a very generous cut of the profits, so I can’t help feeling hopeful that it passes! I’m not sure we will stick around to find out though. We have a job waiting, and the crew is anxious to be underway again. As am I.

Day 54

Completed our task at the outpost, and we are heading back to the Republic shipyard to do some trading. The settlers provided us with some minerals and supplies that the Republic could potentially use. I’m no diplomat, but I did agree to talk to my Romulan contacts about opening up trade lines. Perhaps we can arrange a deal that benefits everyone.

Day 51

With our Romulan assignment completed and a new ship, the crew and I have felt increasingly less anxious about the future and the Tal Shiar. We’ve taken some odd jobs from a small moon outpost, mostly pest control and salvage. It’s a nice break from flying around in circles, being attacked by pirates and spies every few hours!

I’ve been getting to know the crew better, as well.

D’Van, the Romulan farmer-turned-gunslinger, in particular, is easy to get to know. His friendly, gregarious manner turns every Romulan stereotype I’ve ever heard on its head.

Tovan, my second-in-command, is a little clingy, and at times insufferably direct, but I appreciate his passion. He genuinely seems to care if everyone makes it out of a mission alive.

Keitia, the Reman engineer, seems to hide an intelligent grace under her quiet, angry exterior.

The Romulan scientist, Demala, is the biggest mystery. She speaks to no one, except about ship matters. She has a sharp edge to her that suggests a military background, but a warm smile that also seems to strike without warning.

I look forward to getting to know these people better as we continue to work together. Considering the work we do, the company could be much worse.
